Holiday Gifting Tips : How To Choose The Perfect Gift For Someone

Think about the recipient's personality

If you know someone's personality type well enough, then you can usually guess what kind of presents would make them happy without much effort on your part. Some people are practical and only want things that will help them out with everyday tasks, while others might enjoy having something fun that doesn't necessarily have any practical use but makes life more enjoyable.

Consider the person’s interests and hobbies

"If they love to cook, they'll probably love a new cookbook. If they like to read and travel, they'll probably love a guidebook to their favourite destination."

What are they passionate about? What makes them happy? If you know what the person likes and what activities they enjoy doing in their spare time, narrows down your search options very quickly, and picking the perfect gift becomes a lot easier. If they love to cook, they'll probably love a new cookbook. If they like to read and travel, they'll probably love a guidebook to their favourite destination. If they enjoy listening to music, they'll probably love some new headphones or speakers. If they're into fitness or yoga, check out some gear for those activities. You can also find a lot of great ideas by looking at their social media accounts for clues about what they might like as gifts.

Look at what they already have, wear, or use the most

It's important not to get carried away and buy something that will end up sitting in a box somewhere and never being used. Before you start shopping, take an inventory of the things they already have or use. Look at what they wear on a regular basis or things that they have around their house or office. This will give you some insight into what they like and don't like, which can help you choose a better gift. If they have a lot of clothes but none of them are nice enough for work or school, then consider buying them something nice but neutral in color (black) or style (blazer). If they always wear jeans, consider buying them a pair of dress pants that look good on them or even a new pair of shoes so they can wear those pants more often.

Consider Your Relationship with Them

"Make sure that whatever you buy doesn't seem like an afterthought and instead shows that you put some thought into their gift. "

When considering the perfect gift for someone, it is important to consider your relationship with them. If they're just an acquaintance or someone who works in your office building but isn't part of your close circle of friends and family members, then don't get too personal with your gift selection, you might want to go with something that is practical. Something that they need or would like but wouldn't buy for themselves. Make sure that whatever you buy doesn't seem like an afterthought and instead shows that you put some thought into their gift. If this person is a close friend or family member, then go with something personal, sentimental, or maybe think about what kind of activities they enjoy doing with you and then get them something related to those activities. For example, get them tickets to see a show or if they like playing board games after dinner then why not buy a new game?

Take into account the person’s age

A young person will likely appreciate a different type of gift than an older person. For example, If you are purchasing for a young child, consider getting them a toy or game that they can play with over and over again. If you are purchasing for an adult, consider getting them something that will help them with their personal life as well as their work life.

Ask for suggestions

"Close friends and family members might have some ideas about what the recipient would love."

If you're still struggling to find the perfect gift, you can always ask for suggestions. Close friends and family members might have some ideas about what the recipient would love. Calling on the people who know your giftee the best, is a great way for you to get an idea of their likes and dislikes, and what they might want or need. Also, paying attention to clues that the person drops about what they might want can also be helpful.

Set a Budget

Before heading out shopping, make sure you know exactly how much money you want to spend on each person's present. You can also set an upper limit on spending so that if you see something really nice that costs more than what was budgeted for, you can go ahead and purchase it but keep things on track by making sure all other gifts stay within budget.

Personalise the gift

To make the gift truly special for the holidays, consider personalising it. Whether it's with the recipient's name or initials, or a meaningful message, personalisation adds an extra layer of meaning to any gift.
